Why is ADHD in adults not an accepted disorder in Europe?
Question:
What is your opinion?
Answers:
it took them 23 years to realise my boyfriend has ADHD, and wasn't just 'wrong in the head' and finally give him the right meds he needs.
There is more and more research going on each week about it, and hopefully it won't be long before there's a big break through and it gets the recognition it deserves.
If it were accepted as a diagnosis, then they'd be forced to stop telling parents that their children will outgrow it.
I am with you on this one, its crazy. Do they think once you hit 16 a person with ADHD suddenly is able to cope with life?
I am sure there are many people in prison with ADHD, who have offended because of their inability to think before acting -- not that it is an excuse.
There's a genetic link too, which can't help.
Most people with untreated ADHD develop mechanisms to cope with their problems as they approach adulthood. So a lot of less severe cases of ADHD work themselves out in a way. They still have the disorder, but they've developed mental tricks and skills to work around it, so it looks like it's only a problem for children. However, there are still plenty of adults who never developed those skills or have more severe ADHD and have to deal with it as an adult. Another problem is that, even here in the USA, adult ADHD is a fairly new diagnosis, and with the pharmaceutical companies being as they are, doctors often throw pills at the problem. Not just in Greece, but across the world there needs to be more programs developed to deal with ADHD in adults. There's plenty of books and programs for children to help them learn better focus and study/work skills, but very few resources like that for adults.
