I've been diagnosed with depression recently. I am on Lexapro. Is it okay to start and stop using it?

On and off of a drug especially depression ones is extremely bad and dangerous. Your body will go through withdrawals. I take Zoloft and if I do go off it which has been awhile I will get the side effects when I start back on them again. I throw up and don't feel very well, but it is only for one day. I went off it for about 2 months 6 or 7 years ago and it was not good. I hit rock bottom. Have a nurse or experienced doctor with depression drugs explain what happens when you just flat out go off a drug. Once it was explained to me it made more sense. I would explain it but it is hard to explain.
Talk to your doctor and see if you could try something else. There are a lot of different drugs out there and each of them react differently for each person. But going on and off again is not good. It will mess up your brain chemistry and thoughts of suicide are common.
Remember with suicide...your pain may be over..but it is just the beginning of pain of everyone that knew you. Is it worth that.? Suicide is a cop out and a selfish choice. There are many other choices out there. Feel free to talk to me. I have been dealing with depression since I was in 6th grade. It is a fight but it is well worth the life I have created for myself. My email is thecynner@yahoo.com.
Hope this helps a little
I was never truely depressed but was given lexapro. Its a v/ strong acting med. Depression is not a joke if you are than you better not stop the med till your not
ask for a lighter dosage. not okay to stop if it has been prescribed to you. you are being suggested to take it, if you have questions, then consult your doctor
Lexapro helps for some but may be addictive in some cases. It is never a good idea to start and stop medications without a DR's consent and advice.
Ok. First of all, don't start and stop it...the withdrawl effects can be horrible. Call your doctor. There are so many other meds out there that you can try. The suicidal thoughts can definitly be because of starting and stopping it. I'd call your doctor today and try to get back in asap. Almost all of the meds will have some side effects but with a little trial and error you should be able to find one that works for you! Good luck!
call your Dr. immediately and tell thema bout your suicidal thoughts. Sometimes anti-depressants can trigger suicidal thoughts in certain people.
It is not NOT good to start and stop a medicine without weaning unless your dr. advise syou. Your body builds up levels from the meds and it's not good to mess with that. That in itself can cause bad side effects and mood swings. Talk to your Dr. asap. maybe you just need to try something else. There are many good meds out there. Just be patient. It takes time to find the right meds for yourself and sometimes you might have to stick with a med for about 6 weeks to see if it is helpful and\or for your body to get used to it.
First off, it is never a good idea to go off and on anti depressants. You need to do both gradually. Second, perhaps Lexapro isn't the right drug for you. Talk to your doctor about the side effects. There are many different drugs out there for depression
I take Zoloft for anxiety and depression, and the initial side effects really werent bad... very mild nausea which was gone in a week.
Once your body adjusts to the medication, you shouldn't feel any side effects.
But, like I said, starting and stopping should be gradual, and make sure you talk to your doctor!
no it is never ok to stop and start, that can sometimes b fatal to some ppl. before doin that again make sure ur md knows about it cuz is very dangerous. please take this in consideration n speak to ur md.
Did you call your doctor and tell him/her about the side effects? There are a lot of different meds out there for depression that can be tried if one doesn't suit you. It is not good to start or stop these meds without consulting your physician.
Go to the doctor. With those types of medication, you should not stop all of a sudden. Tell your doctor what is going on and he will change your prescription to something that works. Please follow all directions carefully. If needed, go to the ER if you can't get to your doctor soon. Until then, try eating a few bites of food, take your meds, then finish eating a good size meal.
Having experience on Lexapro, if you are vomitting and the like you need to go to your therapist and a medical doctor and get some tests done. I rarely had side effects with all the meds I'm on.
You especially need to see a therapist if you get suicide thoughts. The FDA, who certifies this medicine, has found that anti-depressants can cause suicide behavior in both adults and teens.
You could take St. John's Wort, but you will go some withdrawl and have to wait for the Lexapro to leave your system. Withdrawl is not cool, but you will have to live with it. And if you are already experiencing withdrawl from taking it so short time, something is really going on here. Maybe you were overdosed? It happens. Of course, no APA-friendly ***-kissing doctor will recommend anything like that.
If your're a kid, odds are you probably didn't need a medicine or are experiencing normal teenage feelings.
Absolutely DO NOT start and stop taking this or any anti-depressant. This type of medication has to build in your system and cutting it off can cause all kinds of bad side effects. Stopping suddenly causes a huge drop serotonin, which can aggravate suicidal thoughts and cause other symptoms like feeling pins and needles and memory problems.
Please, please keep close contact with your proscribing doctor about your symptoms. Most side effects fade away after you take the drug for 4-6 weeks, not to mention you'll feel better. If their really bad though, you doctor may taper you off slowly and then give you an alternative.
CALL YOUR DOCTOR NOW AND TELL THEM WHAT YOU JUST TOLD US!! I'm on lexapro (but have no side effects) and my doctor told me not to ship it or try to stop taking it without telling her first... He also wouldn't give it to my 17 year old sister because she said it could cause suicidal thoughts in teens.. How old are you?
Things will get better... I promise.. Everything happens for a reason although sometimes it's hard to see and take years to figure out why.. Hang in there... Please talk to someone close to you that can help you..
Good Luck and God Bless...
Email me if you want to talk more or vent. I'll listen...
I have been suffering from depression since I was 16.
Talk to your doctor immediately if you ar having any problems.
Starting and stopping the meds can make the depression worse.
Sometimes it takes awhile to find the right med or combination of meds. I also reccomend getting counseling it saved my life!
Never continually start and stop anti-depressant medications. That's a surefire way to screw with the chemicals in your brain and mess up the balance. I've taken Lexapro and it did absolutely nothing for me (no side effects and no benefits) and I actually felt as if I were taking nothing at all. After 6 months of taking it, I tapered off with no problem but seeing as it's effecting you so strongly the withdrawal symptoms will be much worse the longer you stay on them. You'll know withdrawal symptoms when you get them because you'll feel nauseous, have a constant headache, and will feel little electrical impulses in your brain. It's the worst feeling and when I went through it with Effexor I started taking it again just to alleviate the symptoms. Don't put your body through the ups and downs. Decide whether or not you really want to stay on the medication and follow through with your decision.
Call your doctor and talk about how it effects you. I was diagnosed of depression but i refused to take the medications. im just so scared of all the side effects and the dependency. When you're thinking about suicide, call your therapist right away or talk to someone. you definitely have to talk to your doctor about it. don't start and stop taking medications without telling your doctor. hang in there. i hope you feel better.
