What are your thoughts on prescription medication? bad or good?
Question:
are we using pills instead of addressing the issues that affect our emotions?
Answers:
Wellbutrin saved my life, and anyone who has a problem with that can kiss my bum!!
I completely agree with you. Lately whenever there is something wrong we immediately look to medicine. Our grandparents tend to be on so many medications that many times they are taking medicines for the side-effects of other medicines!
Have you ever heard of Xango? It is a purely a fruit drink it is made from a mangosteen fruit that is literally put into a blender with other types of fruit juices such as grape, apple, cranberry and such. I believe that this juice is amazing, it has helped the people I love in so many ways. It has over 40 different kinds of Xanthones. Frankly our body has evreything it needs to heal itself, sometimes it just needs a little help. And thats what Xango does it strenthens our bodies natural disease fighting mechanisms.
I have anxiety and panic attacks, and would not be able to function without my medications. Sure they have side effects, what though in this world doesnt have "side effects" (i.e. you could choke, while eating)?
It comes down to the question: Do the benefits outweigh the side effects? In my case, absolutely.
I am on Prozac, and it causes delayed ejaculation. No big deal for me, I am single.
When I first begin Prozac it causes me to be cold for the first few weeks. I can live with that.
I am on Klonopin for the acute panic attacks. It makes me sleepy but not to where I cant function normally.
Yes, the meds have side effects, and yes they help me immensily, and I couldnt nor wouldnt function without them.
Yes - prescription medication are over priced and some are dangerous - e.g: the Statin Drugs like Lipitor.
I just started taking a non-prescription pill - DHEA because I am 77 years old and at best it can only kill me!!

The first antidepressant I took did really help calm me down and gave me a spark again. I had to stop taking it 9 weeks into the course aftr an allergic reaction and have been downhill since. It did take weeks to work and until it did it made my depression worse. I had very minor physical side effects.
The medication does help, it breaks the downward cycle of depression allowing you the freedom to deal with the issues behind your depression, it is also much more effective with therapy.
HI, you hit a nerve. Depends on our "problems" but for me and others.with almost any diagnosis, there is usually a "root" cause that can be determined by therapy, EMDR,etc.. Sometimes we have to take some meds to get to the point of being receptive to whatever therapy. I think, too many times we are prescribed something that numbs us...and makes it more difficult to get to the root problem. Guess it boils down to how severe your problems are, what they are ...and not knowing yours.I'm giving some general opinions.
It has allways been a question my therapist has had.if I've had so many meds...that they prevent accessing all of (in my case) the buried trauma etc thru EMDR..and what affect taking every med on the charts has had.verses the "normal" signs and symptoms of my condition.
The SSRI's (newer anti-depressants) don't really rewire any thing, they just add Seratonin and other neuro transmitters to the brain..which in theory should help depression. Have you noiced almost nobody tests for seratonin levels ? I've asked for years thinking it would be nice to know if one needed a med before taking it.and was told it can't really be tested for. It can. Old tests were difficult and expensive and not to reliable to my understanding, but there is now a test done with saliva that is supposed to give an accurate level. Main stream medicine hasn't caught on too much yet.
In any case anti depressants probably don't affect the ability to get to root problems and may help depending on ones condition.
Anti-anxiety meds are another story.anything that numbs the pain or memories may prevent accessing and processing those buried "emotions", "pictures".
Better quit rambling, feel free to email or IM in Yahoo under ...mysihba...if you want to hear more about my success and failures, etc

Some medications have become over-prescribed as a "quick fix" to problems that could be better addressed in therapy or by other means.
However, there is a section of the population that benefits greatly from psychiatric medication. Anti-depressants and mood stablizers are probably the only thing allowing me to live a relatively normal life with a full time job and an apartment with my boyfriend. I don't survive on a functional level without the medication. The side effects are listed because they are possible, not becaue they are probable. I have had little to no noticable side effects from my three meds.
Personally going through anxiety and depression i would say that in some cases it would be a lot better to not take the perscription meds. If your symptoms are so terrible that you cant even function in daily life, then maybe you should give the meds a try. From my own experience, they just make it a lot worse... but you could be different... i dont know. As for herbal remedies try Magnesium/calcium (should come together as obne pill), ginseng, Fish oil (i know it sounds gross but it helps correct any chemical imbalances in the brain that cause these types of mental illnesses), And drink green tea (green tea has a bunch of essential nutrients that help a lot!) You should also try exercise and breathing exercises!
Good luck~~
