What is wrong with me? Do I have obsessive compulsive disorder?

I think people are too ready to label things. You may not have OCD at all. The best way you can deal with this if it's bothering you is through behavioural therapy. The next time you have the urge to rewrite an essay only because its not as neat as it could be, resist the urge. The next time you see something out of place and you have an urge to put it back in its place...don't. Leave it out of place and eventually your tolerance level for things being less than perfect will go up and the small things won't get to you quite as much.
To be diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder you usually need to meet a certain criteria and it has to interfere in several aspects of your life to be considered suvere enough to treat with meds, but if you just have a slight case of it I suggest training yourself. Do what the other poster said by not allowing yourself to follow down that road. I have OCD, my Mother had it before me and my daughter also has it. It is more difficult to control in my daughter since she is younger, but I can control it if I put my mind to it. It can be difficult at times and expecially since I am very afraid of germs and getting sick. Just recently I decided I would not wash my hands with that antibacterial gel and wait till I got home to wash that I could handle it. Well the one time and I got realy ill from some virus I had picked up while we were out. Now I am back to my handwashing rituals again. You do have set backs. I go thru times where I am a little better and other times where I am a freak. Expecially during the months of October thru March I am a freak about germs and ilnesses. My daughter has it more severe than anyone in the family. Things have there place and order in life, no crowds or loud noises, strange places, etc. and the list goes on.
Hang in there. try to see if you can get this under control without meds.
From someone who has suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) for over 25 years, here are a couple articles about how to treat the disorder:

im the same way. it's natural with some people. i dont think you need medication for it. to me it's a good thing to be that way at least you care about how you want things to be... that's good so look at it that way.
