Appointment at the doctors for depression..?

Question:
i want to book an appointment for depression at the doctors in the next couple of days, but i have a really low confidence and self esteem and would be too nervous to tell the doctor everything that is causing my depression...should i go through with the appointment or try something else to help?

Answers:
PLEASE go through with the appointment. Tell the doctor what you can. He or she has seen everything and is ready to understand and help. You have to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis. I think you should definitely do it.
If you are depressed, there is an in balance of brain chemicals. In 2007 the way to treat that is with drugs that regulate the brain chemicals.

Bottom line you need to see the doctor. You can not try something else.
What are the other options that you might consider? If you go to the doctor and are less than honest you will get less than you deserve with regard to treatment. Think of the doctor as a non-judgemental third party who is only going to do whatever is possible to help your depression. Also, many physicians (myself included) do not try to find the root of the depression...we believe that you treat the symptoms. Think of it this way.if you had diabetes, would your doctor treat the symptoms or waste time trying to find out why you were diabetic? Depression is the result of organic brain chemistry. There are certainly environmental factors (personal issues) that could be contributing to it but the symptoms need to be addressed. Later, after you feel stronger, if you still have unresolved issues that you feel you need to talk about then you should consider talking to a counselor or therapist. Best wishes
I have had a couple of hypochondriac relatives.

One of them was created when she went to her medical doctor and he scared her into to believing she was crippled by a mild heart murmur. She never again exercised because she was afraid she might damage her heart.

Have your doctor refer you to a neuro or cognitive therapist.

Pills are only a temporary solution in extreme cases where it can actually be proven that there are chemical imbalances.

In most cases depression is treatable in therapy. A good therapist will lay out a course of treatment and tell you exactly what he will do and for how long.

He should also train you to help yourself.

Yes, you should go through with the appointment, for one thing depression is very treatable. And, if you do have depression the chemicals in your brain maybe un-balanced. Medication can help with that. If you are already nervous, then that should tell you something isn't going right. You do need to talk someone, and why not , the doctor at least he will listen to you, and maybe find out why things are not just right. Some anti-depressants helps with nervousness, and or anxiety or both. You do need help, but I am not a docotor, take it from one depressed person to another, get help. And the way we get help is to go the doctor. If she/he says to take meds, or go to therapy then do it. If depression is untreated it will make your life a mess! You may have low self esteem, but finding out why we are depressed is one way to get some of our self esteem back. What can you lose?
In seeking help from either a psychologist, psychiatrist, or your primary care physician, you can rest assured that your information will be held strictly confidential and will not be judged, spread, or chided. Do bear in mind that mental health professionals speak with multiple individuals each day with similar symptoms as yours, and know exactly how to effectively treat people. Low confidence and self esteem are symptoms of depression (along with sleep disturbance, eating changes, guilt, concentration difficulties, aggitation, exhaustion/fatigue) and while they may not be comfy talking about, they are very important to tell your doc. Be sure to give all of the information that he/she will need, and this person will be able to help you in a relatively short amount of time.

Just remember, antidepressants work only while you are taking them, while psychotherapy will last for an indefinite amount of time. See a cognitive-behavioral therapist (CBT) and you will be feeling better soon. That I can almost guarantee.
Definetly! Talking to a doctor is just the same as telling people on YouQA.com your problem except they'll give you better advice! Go, it could really change your life.
