Most paraplegics can live at home with modifications to the house. Occupational therapists can help with this. Usually while the injured person is still in hospital they do extensive rehabilitation with a view to being able to take care of themselves. They have to learn how to take care of their bladder and bowels, learn what to do in case of problems with health and just generally learn how to live a whole new life. it is possible to be happy again even after such a life changing experience.
I did a little research and came up with these two help line numbers to call:

National Spinal Cord Injury Association: 1-800-962-9629

Spinal Cord Injury Network International: 1-800-548-CORD

The web-site of the 1st number listed will give you a list of where to get help in your state. I think that is the better one to call. Even if you don't have a spinal cord injury I would call them for help.
