Anxiety And Alcohol?

Question:
I had anxiety disorder for a few years, I don't drink that much only socially but when I do drink my anxiety is sky high the next day, panic attacks are also common.

Is there away to stop this, I like the odd drink now and then when I go out but its ruining it, even one drink will make me anxious.

I think I've created a negative neurological association with alcohol, I.E it made me anxious once and I have associated this feeling to every hangover I get.

Answers:
Im assuming you dont suffer from anxiety when you had a few drinks since you say the next day it comes...if you must drink and your sensitive to feel the onset of an anxiety attack i would take either 2mil valium or perhaps .25 xanax those are quite small doses yet need a doctors prescription to get them..i wonder if smoking grass gives you a similar after effect as alcohol?

Make sure you eat well, fresh fruit and veg every day, make sure you have a good dinner before drinking any alcohol.

Alcohol destroys vitamin and minerals you eat, so a vitamin supplement may be useful, also B group vitamins, talk to your health food specialist shop and see what advice they can offer.

My advice would be to avoid the alcohol, but eating a well balanced diet and taking supplements may be helpful.
I don't have social anxiety disorder - I'm OCD. But last year, after 6-8 years, I quit being a functioning alcoholic, when I started Zen meditation.

I can't say enough about how meditation has helped me. I highly recommend it.

BTW - if you're only drinking sociall, you can always drink coke, OJ, TJ, or other non-alcoholic drinks.

OTOH - if yu must have alcohol, consider why that might be.
drinking alcohol and having anxiety is NOT a good idea!
not only do you feel terriblely anxious. but some studies show it can make you anxiety worse! (that is already is while not drinking)

i know, nobody wants anxiety to limit them on what they do, but sometimes you just have to do what's best.
Yes alcohol can make you anxious, I know from experience. It would be easy to say don't drink but if you do suffer anxiety it is better not to if you don't like the unpleasant side effects. But realistically if you fancy a couple of drinks make sure you have plenty of fluids before and after you drink to help flush the toxins out and this will help your liver cope and a good healthy meal too and something light when you get in. Eat plenty of healthy fruit, (bananas are good to keep your potassium levels up) and veg to keep your vitamin and minerals up and of course every day plenty of fluids. Steer away from caffeine, coffee, coke for instance and chocolate can also be a culprit. Watch if you are taking any sort of medication, even some over the counter painkillers can increase anxiety, especially those containing codeine. If you are experiencing more anxiety after any alcohol intake, your body is trying to tell you something, some people have a much lower threshold than others and that doesn't necessarily mean they get drunk easier it is an overall physical thing too, not everyone's liver has the same tolerance to alcohol. As you explain every time you drink now you associate the anxious feeling with drinking and that of course will make you even more anxious, so it's a bit of a no win situation. Hope you sort it and take care of yourself!
read the cognitive behaviour series i read the one on depression and it cured me readers@constablerobinson.com go on have a go they are great
Yes Yes Yes.I to experience the same high anxiety for several days after drinking to the point where my sleep patterns are seriously disturbed no matter how tired I am. It seems to be a long accepted fact that alcohol disturbs sleep pattern but no-one has ever explained to me why. My experiences suggest to me that this has a physical cause rather than a negative association. Lets not forget that despite its availability, social acceptance and legal status it still remains one of the most bodily destructive of the social drugs freely available in England
You just gotta ask yourself is it really worth feeling crap & panicky for the sake of having a couple of drinks? I wouldn't bother, you can have still have fun & then feel great the next day.
