Fear of the mirror or your looks??

Question:
My boyfriend of 2 years (20 years old) dosnt look in the mirror and if he does he'll become very emotional and upset (or on a good day ,it ok and hes fine to wash and shave and do his hair in front of it), and the most daunting experience is the hairdressers as he thinks it makes him look uglier or weirder etc, when it dosnt hes gorjus and he wont go for help I dont know what to do I carnt have pictures in my room if hes coming round or have a mirror visible.I love him to pieces and dont know what to do as know one else knows?? Is this something that can be treated or does it have a name?? (He has suffered from depression also as we both have done)

Answers:
It sounds like low self esteem. I don't know if he'd be willing to try but this might help: Get him to look in the mirror but instead of seeing himself through his own eyes, tell him to look at his reflection as if he were you, looking at the amazing, gorgeous man that he is. Tell him to imagine and focus on how good the person in the mirror makes you feel. If he repeats this exercise, he'll hopefully start to feel a bit easier about looking in the mirror.
ive suffered from the same exact thing up into a year ago! i used to belive i was ugly my whole life. the only real way to get over that is what i did. thought about what made me ugly and fixed it. It is something that can be fixed. throw all the old pics away, and take new ones. Accept more compliments. Im not saying become narcistic or concieted. But simple things like this could help. Take pride in your best assests. Like me people love ma hair and ma lips. Now i love lookin in the mirror and i didnt b4. Its more about your whole attitude and the way you take pride in yourself. If your having problems, change them and fix them.
well if hes that hot maybe no mirrors is a good thing i always hated a self centered good lookin guy
Its called low self esteem, he needs some confidence building classes and he needs to learn love himself. It is perfectly OK to do this.
It sounds like your bloke could have a phobia. This particular phobia is called Catoptrophobia - it is a phobia of mirrors. If he has this phobia he will get particularly stressed and will probably have panic attacks or fits if he has to look or be near a mirror. If it doesn't sound that serious, then maybe your boyfriend just has low-confidence issues which can easily be treated by a doctor, or a psychiatrist. These will help alot. In the meantime, why don't you suggest washing his face for him and shaving etc, or when he's having a 'good day', stand behind him where he can see you at all times so he knows he is safe with you.
Good luck and I hope he conquers this fear!!.
