I have panic attacks, stress and anxiety disorders, this is an extract from the info my psycologist gave me, hope it helps.
What is Anxiety?
- Anxiety and panic feelings are very common.
- Anxiety is a normal, healthy and necessary reaction.
- Moderate amounts of anxiety actually improves our performance.
- Anxiety becomes a problem when it interferes with our performance or everyday lives.
- Anxiety cannot be banished completely but we can learn ways to control it.
- Anxiety can be a problem for several reasons:
- some of us are born with a tendency to be anxious in certain circumstances;
- we can learn to be anxious from parents or others during our early years;
- a traumatic incident or several stressful events or problems can increase the likelihood of anxiety occuring.
Anxiety is kept going by avoidance, the beliefs we hold, the"wrong kind of help" and our own unhelpful behaviour.
Anxiety does not harm us. We are not "going crazy", we will not faint (ad by me thats crap cause i have fainted 5 times now), or have a heart attack. The symptoms will pass.
Long-term anxiety can lead to: anger, bitterness, loss of confidence, depression, loss of interest in aspects of life and problems in relationship and at work.
ANXIETY SYMPTOMS.
Physical symptoms:
palpitations
dizziness
blurred vision
dry mouth
aches and pains
overbreathing
chest pains
tingling sensations
indigestation
nausea, vomiting
frequent urination and diarrhoea
sweating
tremor, shaking
blushing
"butterflies" in the stomach
difficulty swallowing
fatigue
feeling faint
numbness
Behaviour:
avoidance
isolation
try to escape
drink alcohol
take drugs

fidgeting

over-eating or not eating
Thinking:
"What if i loose control"?

THE FIGHT-FLIGHT RESPONSE
- We are "programmed" to respond to danger/threat.
- Our bodies prepare to fight or flee.
- This response creates changes in the bodythat cause the physical symptoms of anxiety.
- Our mind perceives some danger.
- The brain sends a message which results in adrenalin and noradrenalin to be released.
- Breathing becomes faster and shallower, supplying more oxygen to muscles.
- Heart pumps faster to carry oxygen around the body.
- Liver releases stored sugar to provide fuel for quick energy.
- Digestion slows down or ceases as blood is diverted away from the stomach.
- Bowel and bladder muscles relax
- Pupils dilate.
- Mouth becomes dry.
- Muscles tense, ready for action.
- The body cools itself by sweating and flushing.
Once the danger is past the body quickly returns to normal.
THE ROLE OF THOUGHTS
- Our thoughts play a major part in increasing or decreasing our anxiety.
- Negative thinking reduces our ability to cope.
- By identifying what we are thinking when tense or anxious, we can try to change these thoughts.
- Being aware of "worrying thought patterns" can be help be helpful:
- all or nothing
- Overgeneralisation
- Catastrophising
- Disqualifying the positive
- Jumping to conclusions
- Should statements
- Emotional reasoning
- Personalisation.
- There are 3 main ways to reduce the effects of negative thoughts:
Mental relaxation;
Distraction;
Positive thinking.

It does sound like anxiety or panic, or any of those forums support sites? If not you could consider joining one because people give good tried and tested tips for help dealing with things such as this.
You could also try speaking to your doctor for advice, or a counsellor to find out why you are feeling so anxious.

Here are a few examples of diversion tactics to use whilst having an attack. Practice them, they really work!
1. Splash face with cold water - this produces the dive reflex and causes your brain to send messages to your body to slow down
2. Distraction - Count down from 100 as fast as you can, repeat over and over. Do maths problems or anything else that occupies your mind
3. Listen to your favourite music loudly and sing along to it
4. Say to yourself - this has never hurt me, it has never hurt anyone else and it never will. I know what it is and it means nothing - disempower the attack
5. Tell yourself that what you are feeling are sensations; nothing more and that sensations never hurt anyone
6. Watch a funny video on TV, laugh out loud
7. Don't look at yourself in the mirror
8. Keep some apples in the fridge. Eat one, then another if you wish
9. Gently slap your cheeks and dance around - confuse your thoughts to distract them
10. In the night, get out of bed, turn on the TV, get a drink, eat an apple and keep moving
11. Talk to someone or phone someone - don't discuss your anxiety
12. Do something physical if you can
13. Do not sit down! Keep moving
14. Do any amount of these diversion tactics simultaneously if possible.
How to Cope with Panic Attacks
Living in constant fear and suffering from panic attacks? Think your time is up? Read this and you may be able to avoid these thoughts in the future.
Steps
1. Admit to yourself that you have a problem, a panic attack can be a very frightening and uncomfortable experience, but it is absolutely not dangerous. It may be difficult to come to terms with the fact that you suffer from a mental illness, but you can't begin to help yourself until you do.
2. Realize that you are not alone. Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder (not a mental illness) that many other people share.
3. Understand what panic is. Panic is just excess adrenaline that runs through your body when it's confronted with a possible life-threatening situation. Feelings of panic can be very scary, but the feelings you have are your body telling you to fight or run away from the potential danger. They are actually protecting you, so you shouldn't worry about them. Close your eyes for a second, take a deep breath and rationalize your thoughts. You will come to no harm!
4. Go see a doctor. There is a lot of medication that can help, and there is also fantastic therapy out there that medical professionals can introduce you to. These attacks won't go away without you acknowledging them, and they can restrict your life dramatically. Going to a doctor is a necessary step, and does not make you a weaker person.
5. Let people who are close to you know you have a problem. Others can be very annoyed if you act strangely all the time without giving a reason. Those who don't get panic attacks sometimes have a hard time understanding what they are; those who care about you will have an easier time dealing with your problem if they know how you are feeling. Try to explain your situation as clearly as possible; if necessary, go on the Internet and print off some information about panic attacks for them to read. You may be surprised at how supportive they will be.
6. Do not try to avoid those situations where panic happens. Avoidance will only 'reinforce' your panic and the more you avoid, the more panic the avoided situation will generate. When attacks do happen, don't try to fight the feelings. Instead, let the feelings of panic come and wash over you, and they will pass soon if you let them.
Tips
* When you feel better, help someone else get help. There are so many scared people out there of all ages, so tell them your story. You really can help others just by talking and sharing experiences.
Warnings
* Don't turn to alcohol or drugs to help you cope. They will only hinder your healing and add to your problems. Acceptance, professional help and educating yourself are much more productive.
* Avoid caffeine. It can increase anxiety.
