How can I keep my daughter from being too shy?

Question:
I was painfully shy growing up. So much so that it affected me in school. I don't want my daughter to be the same way. I know you can't really change a person's personality but, is there anything I can do to help her from being too shy? She is 2 1/2 by the way.

Answers:
one thing you can do is tell her what to say when you meet people. For example tell her to say hello etc. Sometimes shy kids just don't know what to say. Also praise her and try to make her feel good about herself. I was shy too and my parents never did this but I think it would've helped.
I was also and like you I did not want my children being the same way. I made sure they were around other children often. They began Nursery school at two years old and continued with preschool etc. until Kindergarten. They took dance lesson and played soccer. Now they are 14 and 16 and very out going. The key is to not shelter them, as difficult as that is.
If she is in preschool, make lots of play dates so she can practice socializing with her peers. Keep her self esteem up, too. Also, when she gets in grade school, be active in letting her have friends come over! I promise this will help her,
get her involved in some sports...like maybe t-ball or soccer, baseball..things like that. socializing with other children at an early age will help. i was shy too.
she should stand before a big mirror and and talk with her while looking in her eyes
