Does anyone with a mental illness have problems with doing well in school?
Question:
Before anyone says go see a therapist or go get some medication, that's not the answer to everything. I was on medication which helped, but it made me gain weight, fucked up my metabolism and decreased my sex drive. Now, I'm wasting many hours worrying and getting depressed over my weight. Therapy is just too time-consuming, cost-effective and it's hard finding the right fit of a therapist. Sometimes I feel like I know more than therapists, and I'm only a 2nd year clinical psychology graduate student.
Answers:
i have had the same problem with school. to the point where i felt like giving up. i'm bipolar. and yes, i know how it feels. but, just don't let the mental illness you have over rule your life. look beyond and you'll do better and be able to concentrate on what you're doing. you'll be fine... JUST DON'T EVER GIVE UP.
Maybe the fact that you're a graduate student is part of the problem. Maybe you think that you know more than you do therefore you're not willing to work with the therapist and as important as weight is as a psych. student you know that there are many medications and that if one don't work than there is probably one that will work I just have to find it. It seems to me that you like having a excuse for not doing as well as you could because to do your best and to get control over your depression would take to much time. Well guess what it's not going to get easier if you don't try to get control over the situation. It's your life you have to decided how much you want to fight for it. Yes therapy is time consuming but do you really want to live life the way that you are now??
