Why am I FORCED against my will to see a psychiatrist, take medicine, & have a case manager?

Question:
I'll be 24 very soon, & I have a college degree. Some people tell me that I shouldn't be made to take medication, have a case manager, & see a psychiatrist if I'm of age & don't do self-harm or harm to others. When my family or my case manager or the doctor suspect I'm not taking my medicine, they make threats to have me mentally hospitalized. Is this legal?

Answers:
You can't be forced into any of this. If you're a danger to yourself and others you may be held for three days in a mental facility. You may also be declared incompetent and hospitalized, but this is very difficult and you sure don't sound incompetent. I don't believe a judge would rule you so.
This depends on where you live and other circumstances, I think. In general, the law is that you can be confined or forcibly medicated if it's been determined that you are a danger to yourself or others.

On the other hand, if you're on public assistance or in the military, you're probably subject to another set of rules that wouldn't apply if you were just minding your own business.

In short, I don't know, and won't, unless you tell us a bit more.
Yes it is. because they feel that this is the only way the can do their job right. Sounds like you been classified as a "nut" or may have some minor depression issues. They force the drugs down your throat so you don't hurt anyone...its kinda like stopping the train before it reaches the station.
well first of all it depends what u r being medicated for. you should be able to say no to all this. they can have you court ordered to a mental facility, but only if they ave valid reasoning, id like to be able to tell u more but u didnt specify their reasonings for forcing u to take medications.
So you must have went crazy sometime right? What happened? Boyfriend break up with you? Threaten to commit suicide? Obviously something happened at one point and your family is concerned. If your a better person on the meds why dont you continue to use them? In most states it is legal. Especialy if you already have some sort of record. What else is going on that you didn't mention?
Can you provide a little more information? What is your diagnosis?

If you are legally required to go, someone has provided evidence that you could potentially harm yourself or others and may have attained a court order.

I would present your concerns to your case manager. Maybe you could find your own therapist who is new to the situation and could provide a second opinion on diagnosis.
I know that in the state I live in (Florida), the law clearly states that you have to be a serious threat to yourself or someone else to be commited to a psychiatric facility. As far as I know, the same goes for nearly every other state in the country. In your case, I highly doubt that it's legal to have you hospitalized or FORCED to take your medication unless you display the forementioned risks.
It may be.

Some behavioral or criminal history would be helpful here.
How did you get a case manager?
They're saying all that very easily---they're not in your shoes.

I've been in a similar situation. it seems like part of me wanted to suffer.
Until right now, I believed I was the one resisting medications.
But pain was.

Depression is all about friends and family. Get some help girl from he local bus driver. Get out of Dodge
its a blessing to have psychiatric car e available Most patients are told geta grip go to your out pt visit and hope it works out for you-oh if it doesn't or if the patient is too paranoid tot ake the medicine , too bad tough luck ,end up on the street homeless and with a new drug problem...

Also look into a MENTAL HEALTH ADVANCED DIRECTIVE When you are in stable health (not manic or psychotic etc) look over it and fill it out w help You may decide under certain conditions it is wise to be hospitalized to help your health and to keep your family from being too stressed out trying to care for you , to be hospitalized and get meds even when you are in a state that makes you want to say "no". yet when stable you may understand such times exist when your judgment MAY not be the most objective. Just a thought
