Answers:
There are meds out there for it....
I find that if I record every little impulse that I have ( both digitally and w/ paper and pen) and keep an on going diary it helps me keep things in check esp. w/ spending and legal stuff.ouch!!
if you really do have an impulse control disorder you should be seeing a counselor and they will decide if you need to be on medication or not. There are medications for this and they do work.
Find someone who is also highly impulsive and wants to understand it better or get control as you do. Go places and do things together (Biking, Shopping, Laundry, Chess, watch TV, or to the library to get a book on "moral decision-making"), and whenever either of you sees the other doing something "self-indulgent" beyond simple and safe "fun", - - Stop Them. Then discuss why each took the action they did.
Until the brain grows its own control program, you need to get the necessary resistance from an outside source. Nothing comes more naturally to you now than jumping into a situation the second you see it might happen, You'll know it's working when you start missing opportunities to stop your friend because you are trying to decide to do so or not.
