I told my colleague at work I would go on a work trip, but now I don't want to go and leave my family.?

It depends somewhat on why you don't want to go, and whether it would hurt your company if you don't go. If this is your first trip apart from your family, you may just be anxious. Take a picture of them with you and call them every night from the hotel room. If not going would hurt your company in some way, you really should tough it out. If it's not that important and you just don't like the people you are going with or the place you're going to, then just bow out politely.
make up a valid sounding excuse...or suddenly get "sick"
Just be honest and tell them the truth.
It is best to be frank and honest. You will be respected for the truth. It is an honest feeling to not want to leave your family. I am not sure where the trip is, but I wouldnt want to leave my family for more than one day either.
If the trip isn't that long you should go. iT isn't the end of the world. You'll survive without your kids for a few days. If it's longer than that, I would tell him the truth. You might not get a raise though for being less flexible.
just take a deep breath, call and tell your friend that you didn't think before you agreed to go--- or you changed your mind. it's the right thing to do
oh, and apologize for being inconsiderate
