How do I become certified substance abuse counselor?

Question:
Do I need a degree prior to getting certified or can I just go get certified for this?

Answers:
There is a series of classes that you need to take (usually about 8 of them) and then you need clinical hours (typically 300) to get a provisional license. The classes and # of hours depend on which state you live in. You do not need a degree, though. You should be able to find more specific info on your state's licensing & certification website.
i believe you need a degree first may want to go for your masters or you won't make very much money
You need to be certified as a therapist and specialize in abuse counseling.
It seems...first you need to be addicted to something...because there is some bizarre rationale that someone who has not experienced an addiction won't be able to effectively counsel one who has. Then, two years of college, with a concentration on psych, social work, substance abuse, sociology, etc. Then a brief internship...and you are in, baby!
I am not sure about the state you live in. I live in PA and below is the certification board's website for PA. You can get a certification of ACC I and ACC II without a degree. You need a bachelor's degree and at least two years of paid experience to recieve a CAC (certified addiction counselor). There are also many other certifications as well that you can see through the website below. If your not from PA, google your states certification board. There are also national certifications and below is also the website for NAADAC. Any questions, feel free to e-mail me as this is right up my alley and there are tons of different certifications all with different requirements.
