Mental health and DLA?

Question:
I have just been turned down for DLA, I suffer from severe anxiety and depression and 15 weeks pregnant. I have had this condition for 10 years but it was ok and I could do things for myself when i was on medication but i have had to stop my medication due to being pregnant, which leaves me not being able to do anything for myself, and i can not go out without my husband with me as i get panic attacks and get very dizzy. Should i appeal this decision and can i get some help with it?

Answers:
The government are doing their damned hardest not to recognise depression as an illness and i know it can be debilitating- i used to be the same. But i couldn't get it either and i don't know of anyone who could- you can try an appeal- it won't cost you anything- except stress wise. You are very brave having a baby whilst suffering like that- that would have sent me over the edge. When i was very bad i missed three periods and i went to the GP who said that if i was pregnant by mental health would be taken into account as to how i would cope with a baby. I was glad to find i was not pregnant because i didn't think i would cope especially without help. The government just don't want to help with depression.
you say you get dizzy, i would not want to drive if i was like that for fear of killing myself or someone else...sorry you did ask.

regards x kitti x
Two elements here.
some medications are ok to take when pregnant so go back to your GP and ask them to look into options for you. Your GP should also be able to assist with DLA application by providing supporting evidence. You should appeal the decison and be very specific about what you can and cannot do and excatly what help you require and how often (you may find your husband could also qualify for carers allowance) first stop GP though and if he is not helpful contact your local community mental health team for advice (ask for the duty worker) Good luck - also ask for a referral to the psychological therapies service, sounds like CBT might help you.
Ok, im in your boat... or i was i spoke to my doctor while i was pregnant and she ignored me it wasnt until after my baby was born my health visitor became concerned and i had postnatal depression, infact when i was pregnant i had anti natal depression and no thanks to my doctor it went untreated, i would first speak to your GP or midwife about how you feel, you may get passed on to a psychriatric nurse but this is a good thing. You wont get DLA you are NOT disabled you are pregnant i would suggest applying for either Incapacity benefit or income support. I couldnt work because mine got so bad i couldnt leave the house and they agreed to put me on Incapacity Benefit, you will probably need a doctors sick note for this. I wish you good health in the future and all the best with your pregancy.

Just read you update on your question, im glad you have applied for Incapacity Benefit, dont worry if you dont think you have paid enough NI contributions, if this is the case they should automatically offer you Income support.
From what I undersatnd DLA is hard enough to get if you have no legs, nevermind a 'hidden' illness like depression.

You could appeal, ask a health professional involved in your case to help you with the forms.
You could even try the CAB
Unfortunately, it`s standard practice to reject claims for DLA.

there are institutions available out there that will assist you in filling in your forms again ( check your local phone directory)

Put the appeal in, and if that gets rejected, appeal again.
Pesistence does pay off in the end !
well i wish you you all the best pal,do not expect DLA as a lot of people are finding it harder to qualify these days, you need to be dying now to get it.
Feelings come from thoughts--Change your thoughts--your feelings will be changed. Consult with a gynaecologist who will advise you better. There is nothing to fear or get panicy--Embrace all the situations boldly as if you are strong enough to tacle all the eventualities. Pray--God grant me the serenity to accept the things which I can not change.Must be cool always--sleep and get up at correct time. You will forget everything when you will see a sweet charming baby.God bless you.
I would appeal the DLA, maybe get your doctor to write a letter saying that you are entitled to it.
I've heard that a lot of people with mental health problems are turned down at first for it, so keep trying.
Poor you sweetie. Do not worry to much about the DLA,yes naturally appeal, the percentages are stacked in your favour, but this is not what is causing your problems. If I were you I would go to the nearest NLP practitioner and get rid of the anxiety and depression as fast as you can, you need to be strong and well for when the babe comes. The NLP sessions may be a little expensive in your area, but a lot of Healing practises do offer concessions. GOOD LUCK
from what i remember, i think you have had to have needed help / assistance for a minimum of six months before they will award you anything. i got the c.a.b. to help fill mine in, and they take the details from the worst days you have.
good luck, hope you get sorted, and good luck with your baby xxx
nearly forgot, i was on no medication when i was initially pregnant, but then went on prozac at 4 months. not the best of meds, but better than nothing i suppose, and i had no side effects, nor did my little one x
I would appeal the decision, try going to CAB to get benefits advice and help on the appeal. As for Incapacity benefits, it doesn't matter how much NI contributions have been made, if you are incapable of work for whatever reason you should qualify.

I have severe depression and dissociation and I qualify for DLA as I need lots of supervision. I also get Incapacity Benefit as well as I've been told by my psychiatrist that I'm not capable of working.

All the best with the appeal.
