It's probably just a mix of a slight case of post-traumatic distress along with habit. It's perfectly natural to be disturbed by an event close to you, and then beyond that, after few months of going to bed at 11:30 and waking up late, that's what your body expects! Instead of trying to force yourself to fall asleep 'early', try staying up extra late one night soon, and then getting up 'early'. You'll be tired all the next day, but you'll be able to fall asleep more easily the following night.
I had to switch from sleeping at night to sleeping in the day, and even without a trauma, it's rough.
It sounds to me like you need talk to somebody about your fears and anxieties. I think that once you get over these fears, you will then be able to establish a better sleeping pattern. Some people try reading or other homeopathic remedies to help them get to sleep, but from the sounds of it, your problems lie w/ in your mental state, and you need to work that out differently. Seek out some professional help, before the summer is gone, and you've spent it in a REM state.
See sleep disorders, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris... on page 3, and gradually move your bedtime back by 15 - 30 mins, daily, staying awake for at least 14.5 hrs. No naps! If you use either the mindfulness breathing, or word/phrase repetition, on page 2, in bed, after lights out, it may help, but if you use it during that 14.5 hrs, set an alarm, for 20 mins. Also see anxiety, and PTSD, on page 6. Journal your fears, and/or talk with someone about this.
