How do u deal with a relative that has Alzheimer's?
Question:
She hears cuss words on tv and she repeats them, she's always been a christian woman who never said anything that wasn't appropriate.
Answers:
My grandfather has alzheimer's... it's sad cause I love him to deeath. For some reason I don't think about it, probably because he lives all the way in Korea. But the time is coming when he's going to die (he's in the last stage of alzheimer's). For your aunt, you should enjoy what time you have left, and be grateful she is still somewhat coherant. Pretty soon she won't even do anything, much less speak... she wont even know who you are. My guess is that she has demetia also, so just try and cope the best way you can and enjoy the time left you have with her.
As the disease progresses, she will likely need 24/7 supervision, so she does not wander off, or accidentally harm herself. I'd suggest you find a nice nursing home near by, work through the personal guilt of facillitating her placement there, and keep her safe.
It's sort of nice she has that belief system in place (the fear she experiences isn't nice, but if you don't have to worry about wandering, that's less stress). Maybe an electric device on her door that will alert you if she leaves at night, and getting family to agree to monitor her in the daytime in shifts? You still have to watch that she doesn't unintentionally do something like forget that she left something burning on the stove.
its time to take care of her. she is not responsible for her behavior and there is no way she can control it, try explaining to her about the cuss words but don't be surprised if she forgets what you say. instead of her body diminishing its her mind and its sad because she would probably be horrified to know she was doing this. be patient, be kind and remember just because she is older her mind is damaged and will continue to get worse, there is no cure for her. my mother has this and has been on the alzheimers meds for two years now but its not helping but getting worse. we just recognize it for what it is and are very patient. good luck.
