Who saw Emerdale last night? Not in the wrong category read me!?

Question:
Perdy:-I didn't think they carted people off like that anymore!
What a small minded portrail of mental health to reinforce the stigma already associated with it!
My Partner has a mental illness, and believe me this is not how it happens!
I also work in the mental health sector too.

Answers:
I found the episode alarming.I was waiting for poor Perdy to be put into a straight jacket at any moment.
Can't help but wonder just how much research the writers put into the story lines sometimes.
I know it's only tv, but as a person who suffers from clinical depression, it can be upsetting to see such an over the top scene.
you're prob right..but if you insist on watching such rubbish
it was awful wasnt it! Ive actually been sectioned twice myself was it wasnt even my fault and the police didnt care so they each just grabbed my arms to get me in an ambulance they just treat you as if your not a human! Its awful!
Thans for raising this Question your certainly not the only one who feels that way about last nights emmerdale!
I totally agree with you. Soaps are on one hand 'praised' for bringing social issues to the fore, but on the other hand they are about making money/attracting higher and higher ratings by trying to sensationalise things. personally, in the particular example of Perdy you mentioned, it just serves to widen the gulf between people who live with and know about mental illness and those who remain ignorant and in the mindset of "It only ever happens to people I don't know and it's something to be shunned, even scared of" let's start of own soap where we raise issues with sensitivity and reality! might not be a ratings winner, but at least the people who watch will have a better understanding!
I didn't see it but I am not surprised by it at all! Mental health is still greatly stigmatised in the media - and in everyday life.
I watched it, poor Perdie but at least she is out of Rosemary's clutchs. I know that they often use the police for sectioning (I saw somebody sectioned when I took my first overdose and the policemen were cute).
True. If that was the case, my ex would have gone a long time ago, seriously, he has problems, stopped speaking to me, don't know why, then sends the odd teddy bear every now & then, with no letter, I know they're his as I recognise the handwriting on the parcels, but you can't communicate through teddies! xxx
