Citalopram help?

Question:
I have been prescribed citalopram for panic attacks and anxiety problems. The problem is, since taking the drug, I am constantly tired and spend so much time sleeping! Has anyone else found this happens when taking citalopram? It is getting me down and I am trying so hard to resist sleeping through the day but it is too hard.

Answers:
Hi Laura!

I was on citalopram for a total of 16 months in two different periods. I didn't experience any sleepiness the only side effect I had was a total lack of sex drive. It made me feel good as a general rule though.

If the sleepiness is really bad and you aren't getting any benefit otherwise then you should see your doctor, he might change your dose or put you on something else. But it might be a temporary side effect, I started taking Amitriptyline in February and it knocked me out at first. Now I am totally used to it and it doesn't make me tired at all.

Unfortunately this sort of medication affects everyone differently, so it's best to go back to your doctor and tell him what you're experiencing so he can make an informed decision about making your medication more effective for you. Good luck!
SIDE EFFECTS: The most commonly-noted side effects associated with citalopram are nausea, vomiting, excessive sweating, headache, tremor, and inability to sleep. Overall, between 1 in 6 and 1 in 5 persons experience a side effect. Some patients may experience withdrawal reactions upon stopping some SSRIs such as paroxetine, and such symptoms also may occur with citalopram. Symptoms of withdrawal include dizziness, tingling sensations , tiredness, vivid dreams, irritability or poor mood.

It has been suggested that SSRIs may cause depression to worsen and even lead to suicide in a small number of patients. These potential side effects are difficult to evaluate in depressed patients because depression can progress with or without treatment, and suicide is itself a consequence of depression. Moreover, the evidence supporting these potential side effects is weak. Therefore, no conclusions can yet be drawn about the relationship between SSRIs and worsening depression and suicide. Until better information is available, patients receiving SSRIs should be monitored for worsening depression and suicidal tendencies.
ask the dr to change your medication
I did take this drug for a while..however it did not make me sleepy. Side effects listed DO include possible dizzyness and/or drowsiness... I would talk to your doctor soon b/c you don't want to be on that if you have to drive...could cause a dangerous situation... there are alternatives to Celexa you can take.
Many of these drugs have side affects and yes citalopram can make you feel tired, i know someone you took them for some time and the overall effect was it made him very tired and unable to function. He switched to another drug, then after a time stopped altogether, because he simply wasn't able to do anything in the day, they slowed up his responses and used to have to sleep in the day. I would say go back to the doctor and ask for something else, sometimes it takes a bit of time to find the right balance of medication.
i was on those for a long time and i now i'm not on them i cant really remember any of the part of my life i was on them.

I really wish that i hadn't ever taken them, i would suggest that you just need someone to talk to about your anxiety and depression, i think that councelling is a far better treatment for what you have, you see its better to talk about the cause rather than numb the syptoms.

The reason that doctors dish pills out left right and centre is because they haven't the resorces to do otherwise, however i think that if you asked them off the record they would admit councelling is a far better option.

Think about what is making you suffer with anxiety and then look to ways of overcoming your fear of that particular thing.
Its all to do with your bodys natural fight or flight response, you can overcome it, usually by facing up to your fears with the support of others.

I hope that you get better soon:)
first you need to go back to your gp and talk to him/her about it this happen to me 4 years a go i had my dose changed because of the same prblem now i am okay if you are on a high dose eg 40 to 60 mg pd may be you need to get this reduced
i'm on this stuff. i had various side effects for a couple of weeks, but after this it got better, and actually started to help. if it's no better after a couple of weeks, speak to ur doc again.
I didn't have this problem when I was on citalopram. As far as I kow it is neither a stimulant nor a sedative. If it is bothering you ask your gp to change to something else. Good luck
I was on citalopram for about 6 weeks, and i was exactly the same as you. About 20 mins after taking the tablet, i had to sleep for about 2 hours, the tiredness was overpowering!
So, i tried taking the tablet at night, just before bedtime, so it didnt matter if i fell asleep, coz it was bedtime, but when i did this, i couldnt get up in the morning coz i was so tired!

i went back to the doc, and told him about this, and he put me on lofepramine instead, and its great, no tiredness at all, and only very mild nausea, i would highly recommend it!
Hope this helps!
Good luck!
Ive been put on 30mg aday now,i dont have any problems with citalopram, but then again everyone is differant, just mention it to your gp(ive been on it for 3 years now)
Sedation/sleepiness is a common side-effect of citalopram.Ask your doctor to switch you too escitalopram-this is an isomer of citalopram, and has the same therapeutic effects without causing sedation.
Hi, I've taken citalopram for some time and after a few weeks you get used to the tiredness. As long as you don't have to be there you could nap in the day but if it affects your night time sleep try to stay awake until normal bedtime - all the best.
