Remedies for flying?

Question:
I have an important flight this week, so there is no possible way to escape it. Lately I've been having off and on periods of panic attacks. I don't want to medicate myself. Sure I'll be alleviating myself but I don't want to patch up my problem. They say the mind and nature are powerful things. How can I naturally help myself? I really don't want to be gasping for air or trembling on the flight.
I have been on planes without any care or worries, until I hit 20.nerve issues.
Does Valerian work? (I've got liquid valerian droplets you can add to drinks)
Last time I tried it, I felt very sleepy...not exactly calm, but sleepy.
Any suggestions? Advice? Techniques?
Please I can't go nuts on a 2 hr flight.

Hi there,

I am a pilot and have been flying for 20 years. I feel very sorry for people who are anxious about flying. It is a very safe mode of travel. Pilots go through extensive training and the planes are always checked and re-checked thoroughly. Flying can be very enjoyable. I would recommend taking a couple of lessons yourself in the future to help re-assure you that it is safe and to give you an idea of what is going on up at the front of the airplane. Do you have any idea why you have begun feeling this way?

Since your flight is so soon, I would recommend taking a paper bag with you as a backup, incase you might start breathing too fast. You can also try square-breathing if you start feeling anxious. Take 4 seconds to breathe in, hold it for 4 second, breathe out for 4 seconds and then pause for 4 seconds before breathing in again. This should work to break the cycle of hyperventilation.

I hope your flight goes well. If it is the height of the aircraft that bothers you, close the window shade. If it is the closed in feeling, get a window seat so you can look out. Bring a good book, maybe go for a massage before the flight. They sometimes have massage place in the terminal. If you are traveling with someone, bring a travel scrabble game or cards, something to distract you from thinking only about the flight. Don’t drink and I wouldn’t take medication unless your doctor prescribed it for you. Bring a healthy treat for yourself, nothing that will wind you up to much. You’ll be ok. If you need anything, the flight attendant will help you. You won’t be alone. And don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with a fellow passenger.

My friend recommends a natural product if you feel you need it called "Rescue Remedy". It can be found at any health food store. I've heard it mentioned on the radio too.

I hope this helps. Take care.

Melissa
Valerian may work but know that it has narcotic properties so its medication as well.
