Ativan/lorazepam to help with vidoin withdrawal?

Question:
Over the past 2 months i have had a series of dental prodcedures and have been taking vicodin daily. I am finally to the point on not needing or wanting to take it, but I think I am experiencing some physical withdrawal.

I have a presscription for lorazepam (also called ativan) for anxiety and restlessness issues. Will taking this help my withdrawls? The worst is the insomnia, so I am hoping i can rely on the ativan to help me sleep. Thoughts?

Answers:
there may be a chance it'll help you rest. however, withdrawal can be hell. maybe weaning off of the vicodin would be a good idea so it's not so rough on your system.
I take lorazepam, it makes you careless and sleepy, it should work great for you.
the lorazepam, like other benzodiazapines, are often perscribed to ease some of the symptoms of drug withdrawal. Most typically with alcohol, but most certainly for other drugs. It should help the insomnia, as that what it is designed for. In a high enough dose, it should pretty much knock you out for the night.

Just be careful, don't drive until you know how it will affect you.
Ativan will help you sleep, however, Ativan is a controlled substance, and can cause addiction as well. Your best bet is to talk to your primary care physician and see if they can prescribe something for you that is non narcotic. A lot of times they will prescribe Restoril for sleep, a mild antihypertensive (med to bring the blood pressure down, because coming off of narcotics can increase bloop pressure), and something to help with diarrhea. Narcotic pain meds cause constipation, so a side effect of stopping them is that you have bad diarrhea. It would be best to take meds that are not habit forming, because you are trying to break the 'habit' of another. What good will it do to come completely off the pain meds if you are physically addicted to another drug?
In years past I was addicted to both drugs, I call ativan a chemical from hell, withdrawl from either drug is more than I ever want again.
