Smoking marijuana.
Many times it due to executive dysfunction problems...or better referred to as terminally disorganized. It's an all too real problem, and getting to the bottom of things can make a dramatic difference in a person's life. Look it up online...executive dysfunction.

Here's a great link about it:

Yes, it's a tourette syndrome link, but this website has tons of information about many different disorders unrelated to tourette syndrome, so don't let the name fool ya.
What? You become a doctor? You've got to be kidding. There's no money for that, and besides it's a lot of hard work, years of school, and, really, YOU as a doctor I can't see. You're not going to try to put that bicycle together by yourself, are you? Oh, great. No, no, don't make that cake. It's too tricky, and you'll ruin it. Now, go do the housework like I told you. And, no, you can't go anywhere this weekend.
being lazy and being afraid of taking risks, also using drugs/alcohol because they bring you down emotionally and then bring you down in life in general
That is a great question! Poor self esteem, poor coping skills, and an inability to see self-worth in one's own work (in other words--My work looks bad/weak/dumb in comparison to yours). This is a learned behaivor, and one that is comfortable. If they don't try, they can't fail. The underachiever needs to set small, realistic goals and achieve them successfully. They also need an outside person to recognize their work as satisfactory. They need encouragement.
Lack of motivation?
I agree that drugs and alcohol can play a part in being a chronic underachiever...however, I have a question: did you lose a friend or family member recently?... because that can have an effect on you too.I know of this aspect because I've been there myself.
One may chronically find reasons not to expand oneself due to poor conditioning as a child. In which creates a poor self image, and robotic way of thinking.
