ADHD or something else?
Question:
My daughter is 6. She has always been a little "off"...i don't know how to describe it. She likes to find the line of acceptable behavior and do the tango all over it. She is exceptionally bright- she learned to read just after her 4th birthday after I told her that letters were like legos that you build words with- that was all the instruction she needed. She's very selfish (she is my middle child, aren't babies the selfish ones?), she always wants the first, the biggest, the best, and she isn't opposed to cheating to get it. She talks out of turn, and either has trouble remembering a list of instructions, or outright defies them because she wants to do it a different way.
There is a history of mental illness on her dad's side-they don't talk about it, so I have no idea what- big family secret.
Answers:
I think you should try to find out what the mental illness was, it could clear things up real easily. Just make sure to keep it to yourself... and if I were you I wouldn't snoop to find out the answer. But yes it does sound like some sort of attention span issue maybe. I am unsure if it can be fully categorized as ADHD. Good luck in the appt.
It has to be ADHD, it makes a person do "off" things. Later it gets to the point where she is very obnoxious. It's treatable but I would just let her be, ADHD makes a person smart. Let's see how she does in school.
some good signs of adhd: impulsive behavior, can't focus, can't stay still for very long, always moving even when asleep. add on the other hand they just can't focus their thoughts can't stay on anything for very long. foods and things that make most of us sleepy will hype them up and vice versa.

It sounds like Asperger's syndrome which is a form of high functioning Autism. If her social skills are lacking it is most likely this. Asperger's kids are little geniuses with poor social skills and sometimes anger issues.
