I can't stop eating. Help.?

Question:
Im a fairly skinny girl with good self control normally but lately I just cannot stop eating. Especially fast food. I just keep wanting more and more and eating so much of it that it makes me sick. I know I'm depressed because I've been avoiding social contact and I sleep a lot. I'm even on 20 mg of Prozac per day. I just need help breaking the cycle and I don't know how. It's like I've got nothing to look forward to but food. But I know if I keep eating the way I am I'm going to put on weight and hate myself even more.

Answers:
Hey hon.

I can completely relate to this, I also have depression and am on medication for it. Some meds can make you more hungry! So that's a possibility. How long have you been on prozac for? When do you see your prescribing doctor next? I would tell them about it.

However, it is very common that when you are depressed you either eat more or less, you appear to be eating more [same as me]. I eat more when I am really down in the dumps and then I feel worse afterwards. It's a habit that needs breaking.

Instead of eating why don't you try and do something else? Go for a walk, draw something, write something about how you are feeling and make a plan for yourself - i.e. If you go for a walk and still feel hungry then you will eat something. Also are you drinking enough water? Our bodies often mistake dehydration for hunger.

I wish you all the luck in the world sweetheart, I know how you feel - please speak to your doctor.

Take care.
Eat at home. Eat slowly. Make sandwiches. Excersice is key! Enroll in a sport or a sports class to meet new people. Stop sleeping so much. The max. should be about ten hours. If youo sleep too much then you'll be tired when you wake up.
Could be the prozac causing you to over eat.

Depression is a horrible thing but for most of us, if we work on ourselves medication is not necessary. It is society and the pharmaceutical industry that has tried to convince us that there is a pill to fix all that we suffer from. This is totally untrue and the side effects from the medication is often worse than the condition that we orginally tried to cover.
The 12 step program says the first step is admitting you are powerless. It sounds like you admitted you have a problem. The next step is to realize there is a Higher Power that can restore you to sanity. Step 3 can be difficult. Try turning your life over to the care of a God of your understanding. Do you have a relationship with a Higher Power?
