I am totally freaked out by mice in my house one ran over my foot?

I have a phobia of mice. When i had mice in my house, i was so scared that i left the house and slept over at a friends house. We got an exterminator, and that got rid of the problem. But then mice came back again some months later. I finally solved the problem by getting a cat. Mice will not come into a house where there is a cat. Mice can 'smell' that there is a cat in the house, and they will not go into that house. Since i have a cat, and it has been years by now, i have not seen a mouse in my house. But if you take this advise, make your cat an indoor cat. If you let the cat outside, it may bring a little 'present' home to you.
These are mice. Tiny, insignificant rodents.
You are a grown woman.
You completely pwn these creatures.
Were they left to their own mousey devices, they would probably end up starving to death. Putting them out of their misery with a quick death via traps is actually more humane.
In addition, it is important for you to rid your home of the mice, because they can be disease ridden (as well as their feces). The white-footed variety are a primary vector for Lyme disease. Consider this a service to the rest of your neighborhood in terms of prevention.
I suggest you go ahead and plan on investing the $50 for the exterminator to come remove the mice. No sense in traumatizing yourself any more. This is their job. It is what they do. Let them do it.

Use some ginger ale in a dish, the mice drink it and they can't burp then they die. I know had a farm house that was infested with them and it really works they can resiste the sweet smell of the ginger ale. Because of all the carbon and they can't burp it kills them.
I have heard of people that were partially eaten by rodents when they slept. Not to mention the Plague... Could someone be putting mice in your mail box? Do you have enemies? I am not trying to scare you but do those mice seem more intelligent than the average? You might consider moving.
let them drink antifreeze , they like it.just keep it away from pets.
