Hi First you are only 15 and been as your in your teens you could well just have hormones playing up right now in your life. Its strange but it seems that a lot of teens have symptoms of bipolar but it all comes down to hormones. Even if it is bipolar as you know there is some genetics at play with this disorder you still have a good chance of leading a very normal life. You see you know bipolar better then most as you have lived with it already so will be able to deal with it better then them that have never known anything about bipolar. Both me and my daughter are bipolar and as long as I stay on my meds I do well enough to function like anyone else does. Don't think being bipolar will end your life because you are going to be no different from the person you are now. If a doctor tells you that you are bipolar always get a second opinion as some don't seem to know the truth if it hits them in the face. Good luck and just enjoy being young stop worrying so much about these things.
A lot of people are grumpy after a nap. Don't let anyone try to suggest you have it just because a relative does. I have friends and family that do this and it just ticks me off. You sound like a normal teenager to me. Bipolar disorder causes actual mood swings that go from high to low. I mean from "I can conquer the world" to "I want to die". The swings don't happen several times a day either. The moods will last several weeks or months.
You could see a psychiatrist who could prescribe you with something if they thought it was necessary. Lithium is a typical way to treat bipolar disorder.
I don't think you have to worry about it at this time. You sound like a typical teenager who has mood swings and goes through periods where people don't make you happy. When I was a teenager I felt the same way, I was always moody but I wasn't because I had bipolar it was because hormonal stuff makes teenagers that way. As I am sure you know because of dealing with your Mom, bipolar is more likely to cause you deep bouts of depression and deep periods of euphoria then being annoyed 3-4 times a week. Counsellors also would pick up on some of the changes this disease manifests so I am sure your counsellor would already have spotted them and discussed them with you if you had begun to exhibit them. Just remember people are successfully treated for this disease every day through both medications and cognitive therapy such as counsellors. Don't be scared :) Just concentrate on being a teenager and getting closure for issues caused by your mom growing up. Good Luck I know you'll pull through.
no, you DO need to worry about it now. you should prob go to like a hallowell center kindof a thing liek a physciatrist and they make one meeting with you and they talk to you liek an interview sortof then they have an interview with your parents/gaurdian and then they can diagnos you and even if you dont have it then they would suggest ways tht will help you learn how to deal with things/ect. i had to go through all this about a yr and a 1/2 ago ended up i had adhd, bipolar depression.. things got alot better it took awhile to get the medicine type and doseage right btu it was worth it, i was failing out of school and getting kicked out of at least one call a day (from adhd) and now im on meds and i learned ways to hold back symptoms better
Bi-polar disorder is caused by the chemical imbalance in the brain. So yes, the best way to treat it is medication. Counselor can only talk to you and use behavorial intervention to help you, which won't fix the root of the problem. I suggest you see a psychiatrist ASAP. Only a psychiatrist is able to tell what you are really experiencing. You can't fix something unless you know what's wrong with it. Good Luck!
Unfortunately, bipolar disorder can be hereditary. My mom has it, not to mention my father has Tourette Syndrome (I get my ADHD from this) so I have to deal with this issue personally. Maybe you should ask your counselor of there is anything else they could suggest to help you, or maybe see your family doctor to see if he could suggest alternative treatment for you. Good luck.
