ECT long term affects.?

Question:
I had bilateral ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) also known as shock treatment. There was intence memory loss at the time. almost complete medically enduced amnesia. It has now been eleven years since this took place. Will all my memory ever return? Will I ever have a normal working memory again? Please no sarcastic answers. This is a real life issue for me and I would like some help.

Answers:
ECT causes memory impairment; however, the effects are not usually long-term. However, many people that have ECT treatments often require further ECT treatments in the future as the benefits tend to wear off.
I can only answer based on what was told to me by someone who had ECT last year. So far, she is still struggling with long term memory (really memory before the treatment). I don't know what the research indicates. I do know that the brain is a remarkable organ--and many things are possible. I would probably start looking for exercises to do that stimulate memory recall. This would be a place to start--and it's free. Good luck!
I have had ECT and I have known people that had ECT. I did not experience any memory loss, but I know it can happen.

If it has been 11 years since you have had your ECT, chances are your memory will not return. I am sorry that this happened to you.
Well i have had ECT three different times in my life and it did help though the last time they said i was not safe to be left alone. My short term memory was not there at all. Now no long term memory left me at all so if yours has i would love to hear from you.
