Why do people associate cutting with "emos"?

Isn't emo a type of music?
So i don't understand why people say that people who cut their self are emo.
When i started cutting i didn't even know what the word emo meant.

People like to catagorize and label other people, it's just a natural flaw of humans.

Emo is like Punk... a group of kids that stereotype themselves into a genre of music. Emo kids usually cut their wrists to get attention and most emo music has the words "wrist" and "cut/slash/rip open" in the same sentence.
Emo means emotional, but yeah represenst music, but some take it to far and try to act what they are not, and yeah some of this music influences this action...you'll have someone saying no, but yes, it does...
Emo is short for emotional.
Emotional kids cut themselves. That's why people associate the two.
Not that it's always a fair comparison, but that's why the stereotype exists.
Because emos are stupid and they announce things like this to the world like its so cool. They do it for attention, cause they are lame! I have found that the people who really do cut, tend to hide it. They dont want people to know that they do it. My friend was a bad cutter. You would never have known if you had seen her walking down the street. Its addicting. The more people notice, the more they worry, and the more they worry then the more likely it will be that they will try to get you to stop by bringing it to light. Its like drug addicts. You wont see them leaving their drugs out and announcing to the world that they have an addiction. HELL NO! The less that people know, the more likely they can continue to get high, just like cutters can continue to cut. Anyone who announces this is more than likely just trying to get attention. Its so annoying!
It is a type of music and I've been called emo because I'm a poet, have depression, like some of the emo songs, can be pretty emotional (what teen isn't?), and tried to cut myself (but couldn't bring myself to break the skin although the people don't know that) and even though I like black, I'm not emo so it ticks me off because I pair black with colors and don't just wear only black. So if I act depressed because I am while someone else is around who calls people who cut themselves or try to, since depression IS emotional and emo stands for emotional, they'll be shouting, "Oh my gosh! I didn't know you were emo! I knew you were kind of emotional and a poet but OH MY GOSH!" It really ticks me off!!!!
Because people like stereotypes. Emo is a type of music, some lyrics of which reference cutting. Some people decided that must make it "cool", which is outright disgusting. It's not cool, it's not for attention, and it's not "emo". But people want to be able to catagorize. It's easier for them to understand cutting when they can associate it with something like that. Anyone who hasn't done it just can't fathom why anyone would intentionally harm themself.
