Do you have to have a docotor diagnoses(sp??) for dyslexia?
Question:
I went to a site with symptons, and the majority of them was a yes for me.
I was surprised to because alot of the things listed were things I hated about myself (like "Can do arithmetic, but fails word problems; cannot grasp algebra or higher math. " HA now I actually have a good excuse for not doing my algerbra =P! and
"Mistakes and symptoms increase dramatically with confusion, time pressure, emotional stress, or poor health." annd the most annoyinnggg..[sorry I'm just glad I finally found a possible answer for this] "Difficulty putting thoughts into words; speaks in halting phrases; leaves sentences incomplete; stutters under stress; mispronounces long words, or transposes phrases, words, and syllables when speaking.")
I also have undiagnosed (but extreemly obvious) OCD, possible ADD, ADHD, and I've had Clinical Depression.
So do I HAVE to be diagnosed? Its pretty obvious..
Answers:
In order for you to have an IEP at school you will have to be diagnosed. If you are in a public school in the U.S. the school can and is obligated to pay for any screening tests for students who may have a learning disablilty. It will take a few days of testing because they will want to prove conclusivly that you do or do not have dyslexia and maybe not something else. If you are diagnosed as a dyslexic, you will be given specail circumstances at school that are garuntteed by law! You will have more time on tests, someone to read a test to you if you need it and anything else that you might need to help you be a successful student! Good luck.
