Any info, and I don't know why she spoke to me like that!?
Question:
Anyone speaking from actual experience of taking them...would be very helpful, thank you.
I want to try an antidepressent for my depression, but I'm kind of scared and hesitate to...plus there are so many to choose from. I have never seen a doctor for my depression, but I'm positive I have it. However, the ONE time I did make an appointment (which I later cancelled) the nurse practitioner I spoke with over the phone making the appointment for me...made me feel crazy! She talked to me like a child and as if I was unstable and also told me "I could call anytime before the appointment if things become unbearable?!" What the hell...I've been feeling like crap for years now...i think I can manage... I have no idea why she spoke to me that way...but I definitely cancelled that appointment the next day. Anyway, any info on antidepressents, would be awesome. Thanks!
Answers:
i think the nurse was only being helpful from the sound of your question. on the subject of antidepressants. your doctor would be the best judge of that. of what you need and dont need. also if you want to find out about antidepressants. go on the computer it will tell you all what you want to know.
First, depression should be diagnosed by a clinical psychologist, after making sure there is no physiological condition that is causing it. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other conditions can make you feel "depressed," but if you only treat the depression, you aren't making any real headway.
Once you have ruled out a physical problem (other than brain chemistry issues), then you should discuss with your psychologist the pros and cons of anti-depressants. It took my father years of trial and error, and different anti-depressant medication, to finally stabilize.
As for why the NP spoke to you the way she did - she has obviously developed a "stock" set of tools for dealing with people who are depressed, and none of these fit your particular condition.
See your doctor for a proper diagnosis to start with. I took antidepressents for a while, and I'm really glad I did, because things were really getting unbearable. People might tell you they're addictive - the old antidepressents could be, but you're unlikely to get that problem now. The ones I took (can't remember the type) made me feel terrible for the first week. I felt tired and fuzzy, and I nearly stopped taking them. After that, it was like I became the old "me" again. I stopped feeling so down, it was great. I had to take them for about 6 months, then gradually came off (on the advice of my doctor). No side affects apart from that first week.
Sorry, this is so long!
Hope it helps. Good luck!
