Do I need antidepressants?

Question:
I'm fifteen and have been depressed ever since I found out my mom was cheating on my dad when I was like...eight or nine? Anyway, it's never really hit me until a year ago because I was always reading while my parents were fighting. Now that I've stopped reading I started cutting myself and thinking of suicide. Just a few minutes after I freak out I'll realize I'm being irrational and stupid, but it always gets really close before I do. One time I locked myself in the closet and scratched all the skin off my arm with my fingernails...it was pretty bad.
So what should I do?

Please don't be one of those assholes who try to push me into suicide.
Only I can make myself feel shitty.

Answers:
you need help. and maybe anti-depressants. go see a doctor or check this forum http://groups.teenhelp.org/

I'm not really helpful, but I can say that your kind of concequences happens to many children or teenagers if their parents are fighting or devorcing.

and dont commit suicide. there is always someone to live for. and it hurts others that cares for you.

and I'm gonna hug you
*hugs*
I think you need someone to talk to, and possibly antidepressants. Will your parents take you to someone? A good therapist can do wonders to make you feel better about a life situation that is difficult. I've done it 3 different times in my life.

But the other thing is, most doctors don't know much about antidepressants. They have too much on their plates to be up to date on everything. I finally found that a psychiatric nurse practitioner, who works in a psychiatrist's office is a wonderful person to see.

Her whole job is about meds. Just that. She knows more than the doctors or psychiatrists about antidepressants. You don't have to go to the psychiatrist to see her. You just call up and make an appointment. Maybe your doctor can refer you.

Your life is going to change a lot in the next 10 years. And believe me, you are going to want to be here to see it. I know that you are feeling sad, but there is a lot of fun stuff ahead of you in your life. There are times I have thought about suicide, too. A lot of us do. But now I realize how much I would have missed had I done it. Good luck. Get some help for yourself. You started it by asking your question, good for you!
