This sounds really silly, but why if I don't believe in ghosts/spirits...?
Question:
I'm a logical person, I don't believe in ghosts at all, and I'm not religious what so ever. But when I lie in bed at night in the dark, and I hear 'suspious' noises, I get scared and have not very nice thoughts. I also can't leave my cudboard door a little bit open, I have to shut it completely or i'll stare at it untill I go to sleep...
I feel really daft because I'm not into all that stuff, yet it still manages to frighten me.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Answers:
It's a reaction built into our primitive brain. When we lived in caves surrounded by predators it was an essential survival tool, which prepared us for flight or fight before we were confronted with danger. Although most of us live in a fairly safe environment our primitive responses haven't changed. Some relaxation techniques might help you to control your fears.
its probably mind over matter, with your subconcious going into overdrive. the more noises you hear the more jumpy you get. thats my opinion anyway.
You answered your own question by say "I'm a logical person..." You get jumpy because you know that could mean danger. Twigs snapping outside is not a ghost, but it could mean a robber or killer or wild animal. It's just instincts.
Nope. But i do know what you mean. My wife is just like that... if the wind makes a noise outside, she reckons its probably an axe wielding maniac out to get everyone !!
PS. nice pic !
I get that way too (although I do believe in ghost & not all that religious)
But - when you hear that little noise, all those scary movies you once watched come into mind and you start thinking about it...
My wife & I get a kick out of staying at "Haunted Inns"...
But my bet is from watching a scary movie or fox news...
All houses creak and groan at night when all else is quiet, guess you live alone, so perhaps are worrying it may be an intruder, quite normal, I sleep with a shotgun besides me, sleep well.
You might be scared that it's something physical like a burglar.
Unfortunately I don't have the same problem because I'm a big tuff guy. (But I would never say Bloody-Mary three time in the mirror!)
Your avatar makes you look old enough to have outgrown these childish fears, maybe you need someone to hold you in his arms as you drift off to dreamland. I'm available if you need me......
Thalia, I truly believe it is the "little girl" inside of you that makes you frightened. We all have our little girls and boys inside of us. I would bet when you were a little girl you heard noises at night and you were frightened. Now you are an adult and you have not learned to rationalize the noises. I will share with you what I do as I live alone as well. Try and imagine Angels in your room..and they are protecting you all night long. Being religious or not does not matter. There is one Angel at the foot of your bed, at the head of your bed and 2 Angels each on the sides of your bed. NO HARM can come to you with them there. I will guarantee you, you will sleep like a baby. Try it hun, it will not hurt. Good Luck !!
I do believe in ghosts because of personal experiences but I also am a very rational person.
Is it maybe that you fear someone is in your house, an actual being, or even subconsciously you might be unsure whether they do exist.
I actually believe we carry this uncontrollable fear from when we were children, you know when we really thought monsters were real, if my son is scared of the monsters in the cupboard I go straight up to it with no fear, yet as you said above I freak out, convinced I'm going to see some evil lit up eyes staring back at me with rage.
I'm not sure if it ever goes, I just think you start to get over it faster. It's always good to keep your wits about you sometimes though ;0)
I beleive anything is possible. I beleive in God though I am not religious. I know that he has a sence of humor...I mean you should get a look at me.LOL. My house makes more noises than any house should ever make. Most all sounds are explained but still frighetning when heard. You know the house settles, a pipe rattles, a mouse knocks over something. Yet I jump to the same conclusions as you have even though you dont believe you must beleive that anything is possible. Your subconcious is open to these thoughs even though consciously you resist them. Its all natural.
When all is quiet and you are still even a stomach gurgle can sound like something strange.
We all fear the dark to some extent. It hides the unknown.
Your own experience tells you that there is nothing to fear. Anything else is just your imagination playing tricks on you.
Just reassure yourself there is nothing and go to sleep.

looking at your picture coooooooor,
I totally agree with arethusa_lad and I would make the same offer,
"Only I'm a happily married man".
I'm kinda like that though mine is I react to every little sound i hear, I dunno why though, you'll eventually get used to it. mines been happening for about 2 years now, its just paranoia.
perhaps you do believe but don't want to admit it
i feel the same way.
but the difference between us is that i am religious. All i do is start to pray and picture the Lord and his Angels looking after me.
no I dont have that problem - but I do have those events.
first deceid ghosts - or whatever other explanation you want s a friendly (non hostile) one / presence (it must or you would have noticed by now - trust me)
then presistanlty use that explanatioon and get used to like some might get used to trains passiing nightly
prob solved
Yea I believe in ghosts - too many experiences of things that are hard to explain without it. if nothing else there are somethings that exist beyond the realms of our philosophies, just not beyond the realm of reality.
