Why does this make me sad??

Question:
I generally don't care about other people (for more than a few seconds, or unless I can get something out of them that I want.). but this makes me sad. An elderly working-class couple with four adult kids, 30-40 years old. Two adult sons, two adult daughters, all mentally retarded, I believe three of them live at home, one of them I believe lives in a group home. Thier situation makes me sad.

Answers:
This is a good thing, your feeling sad. It'd be great if you could be brave enough to allow yourself to use your feelings to get you to take some actions!
I have a 40+ year old brother and know that the older they become the more their needs remain. It would be so great if you could become friendly with the adult children and help them do something you all can enjoy.
The parents are in extra need of some assistance as they age. Little things you could do would help them so much. It only cost you time and not a penny.
Take action!
If you can't help them, then don't worry about it. Anyway, maybe they're happy.
You really shouldn't feel bad for them. They should have stopped procreating after the first 2 retarded ones.

The situation is sad yes but it could have been easily lessened.
It's perfectly understandable that the situation makes you sad. If you want to help out, I'm sure it would be very much appreciated by the family if you occasionally spent time with the kids; from my experience with "special needs" students, they get very enthusiastic about activities and will enjoy your company (even though they're adults, they still need someone to be supportive of them and just do things with them). I'd recommend going on "field trips"with them (to zoos, museums, etc.), taking them to events, or doing activities like cooking or crafts with them. This will likely be very enjoyable to them (and you'll probably have a great time yourself!), plus it will give their parents a break once in a while.
Yes, it is a sad situation, even though the parents obviously love the children enough to care for them rather than to just give up on them and let them all go into a home.

Guess what?

You're human with human reactions and emotions, at least part of the time!
