How do I know if I have depression?

Question:
I think I may have depression. I am sad a lot but I don't know if it's just from everything going on or if its something clinical. I'm afraid to tell my mom that I may have it but I'm not sure whatelse to do. I've delt with cutting in the past and it was an embarrssing thing to talk to my mom about and now if I bring this up, I don't know what she'll say. Is there anyway I can be positive that I have it without seeing a doctor?

Thanks Guys!

Answers:
There are many symptoms of depression. Some of which include: excessive sleeping, low energy, lack of interest in things that you normally enjoy to do, isolating yourself, unexplained crying episodes, frequent worrying, thoughts of hurting yourself, decrease in performance in school or work, and many more. If you think that you are depressed you MUST tell your mom or a trusted adult. It is very important that you see a doctor to talk about this with. There are many different treatments for this including medications and cognitive therapy. Depression is a real medical problem that can be treated and I can't stress to you enough the importance of seeking help. Since you already have a history of maladaptive behavior it is even more important that you get the help you need as soon as possible. Just tell your mom that you are going through some tough times and you have been feeling down and would like to see a doctor. If she wants to know what's bothering you, either tell her or just say that you are uncomfortable talking about it at this time but feel that you really need to see a doctor. And by the way, let her know that you love her. I would think that she would be very happy that you chose to come to her about this even if you don't divulge the details about what's bothering you.
you can go to webmd.com and they have a depression test you can take. its not the best, but it could give you an idea. the best thing to do is to see your doctor. you can always start by seeing your family doctor. you don't have to see a specialist right away. if you tell your mom that you need to see your family doctor it won't seem as obvious as asking to see a psychiatrist
