Yes and no. There are three types of age that the term may apply too. One is your physiological age meaning how health your body is. Your psychological age also known as your social age. That of coarse is your mental development. Thirdly, your actual age measured in years (forgot the proper name). Middle age is commonly referred to the late 30's - the late 50's and can refer to any of the three types of age. Its the time about half way in the persons life. More nowadays it is the time where adults start families and raise children.
It absolutely depends on your age! LOL! When I was in my twenties, I thought the term applied to people in their 40's. When I reached my mid-thirties I started pushing it up! LOL! I turned 50 this year. So I guess there is not doubt about it, I'm middle aged. I'll stay middle-aged until I'm 65.
I don't relate well to that term. It doesn't mean much to me in relation to my life.
When I was a kid, middle age was considered those over 40 (I think--forgotten exactly, its been sooooo long--lol). The general concept has changed with life expectancy changing and us baby boomers reaching 50.
I listened to a gerontologist who said she had decided that the new middle age is 60. I'm not sure if that will apply to me when I get there.
I think it more depends on one's frame of mind. Even if I think I'm going to live to be 100, I still don't feel 'middle aged', now that I'm in the 50s.
I'm 60, I'm only middle age if I think I'm going to live to be 120. Not likely.
Now that I'm here is a surprise of a sort, this getting older thing, my brain is still young, except for a bit of senior moments now and again, but the face in the mirror is that of a pleasant sweet grandma. Humph. Its false advertising.
With the advent of plastic surgery and hair dye and grandmas competing in bikini contests, I'm amazed to find out that I'm still supposed to care about physical things so much, apparently there is to be no rest for those of us tired of dieting and polishing up the exteriors. That stinks.
I think middle age is at 45, with late middle age lasting until 60 and then you are young elderly. Life experiences tend to change about then, at about 45 to fifty most of us lose parents, and 60 and up most of us lose spouses. Not all of us are concerned with children, most of us are concerned with outliving our money. Very few of us buy the stay young forever stuff they are trying to sell us. And we laugh at those who think they are fooling Father Time.
In a generally expected lifetime of 75 years, the middle ages supposedly lies between 40 and 60. Before that you are still considered to be young, and beyond that as old! I think it is all a state of mind, even though my aging body at 52 tells me that with age the old body doesn't want to co-operate fully anymore on all levels (normal wear and tear I suppose!). I have met folks who seem ancient, yet haven't even celebrated their 40th birthday, and juxtaposition folks who are still sprightly and full of life at 80 (looking less than 50!!)! Some days, I too, feel ancient and decrepit, and the next I'm like a blushing teenager again. It just depends on the mood of the moment!
