I feel panic when I do oral reports, what to do???

What is a virtuous method to control anxiety ?

Answer:
I'm 38 yrs old, been doing this type of thing for years with clients. Forget all that "imagine everyone is naked" stuff. Pick out a few people in the room to focus your attention on (when you're not looking at them, look at something inanimate, like a table or the back wall. Whatever u are looking at, really *look* at it, like u would remember everything about it two hours later. Now, there must be something you're good at, better than most people. Like, for example, I am an excellent football player (american football) and I'm very fast. Take whatever you're good at, and imagine that everyone in the room is doing that thing (you included), and that you are so obviously dominant it's ridiculous. For me, even the meanest client or business person becomes a bumbling idiot compared to me when I imagine myself covering them one on one in pass coverage, for example. The previous comment about really focusing on only a handful of people can tie into this. It will help you focus on them if you engage them with a question or something.

as a person who gets incredibly (and noticeably!) out of breath, voice shakes and so do arms and legs, im gonna have to say i know how you feel. i try to just remind myself that everyone has to do it, and no one other than the teacher actually pays attention to a word you say. ahh and that the minute you sit down everyone forgets what you just said. :) ehh other than that, i think our problem has no solution until we get over it ourselves. which (for me at least) i dont see happening.

What is the best way to get over a particular "hang-up"?

From experience: Practice makes perfect...just like everything else. It's unfortunate that we don't get much practice at speaking publicly; it seems like we only speak when it's a big deal.

Along with practicing, I would suggest eating a couple of bananas. Bananas are rich in potassium, and that is a natural anti-anxiety vitamin...they're also a good component to any meal!

Good luck. Remember that you CAN stop, pause, recollect yourself if you stutter, lose track or fumble your words.

If you feel panic, not just nervous, try biofeedback therapy. It really helps by teaching stress management and physical control of your body.

Another option is to take a speech class, if you have an opportunity. The class covers how to overcome nervousness when speaking in front of a group.
