Talk to your family doctor about your situation. He can refer you to someone who can help you. Our son used to be like that when he was younger; now he is social with "the right people." He still feels uncomfortable in some situations, but he is confident talking in others. He became much less reserved when he got in college classes and met people who had the same interests and talked on the "same level." Things will work out for you, too.

Hi there
I have sympathy for your situation, but there is hope on the horizon! It sounds like you suffer from a social anxiety disorder, you are not just very shy, this is actually a illness that can be treated. Treatment approach is multi disciplinary, but with the right treatment you will have excellent results. You need to see a therapist, preferably somebody that has an interest in phobias and anxiety disorders. He or she will help you by teaching you some help full skills. Furthermore you need to see a psychiatrist, they will assess you and see if you need meds to help. There is often a chemical imbalance, and needs to be treated. You probably won't do so good with just therapy or meds, and will get the best result by using both. It is really scary to think about it and takes a lot of courage to do it, but just the fact that you're inquiring about it shows that you are ready to make that big leap. It is not an easy road, but completely do-able and extremely rewarding. Little secret, most people I know to be the social butterflies of our community, had severe social phobias, something to think about when you doubt your self!! Good luck, hang in there, there is a beautiful life out there!
I just have to say that I know exactly how you feel. I used to be like that in classes i could hardly talk, i wouldn't give good presentations and wouldn't talk to people. I started taking things like drama and classes where i had to talk out loud and with people. I say don't worry about what people think about what you are going to say. Start small by giving a few random people a complement the start conversations with people that you meet everyday. Now i am more confident and i love talking with people and making new friends. It is a lot harder then it sounds but if i could do it so could you.

we call it social anxiety, can be treated with relaxation therapy or group supportive psychotherapy, if somatic symptoms is dominant, then INDERAL(propranolol) which is a beta blocker, can be helpful in a dose of 20 to 60 mg.
LUDIOMIL(maprotiline HCL) an anti depressant that works on serotonin receptors in the brain will do the job in a dose of 25 to 50 mg.
