The prostate in one of several reproductive glands that produce fluids that make up semen. The prostate fluid is alkaline so it reduces the acidity in the vagina, it contains sugars that provide food energy to the sperm so that they live, it produces a large quantity of fluid so that the sperm will have a liquid to swim in, it has chemicals that activate the sperm so that they begin the swimming motion with their long tails. When young the prostate is soft and flexible. It is located at the base of the bladder and it surrounds the urethra. As you get older the prostate enlarges and also hardens. When this happens it becomes more difficult to urinate. When a man goes for a physical from age 30 on the doctor will check his prostate by putting on a rubber glove and inserting his finger in the mans anus. This is called the digital rectal exam and it is important in keeping track of how the prostate is growing. It the prostate is to large it could be a sign of prostate cancer.
