Answers:
1. It's not a stage. All men and all women have a propensity for "gayness" on some level. Giving in to it and choosing it as a way of life makes you gay.
2. It's very true that some people may be "gay from birth". That is, they have a hormonal/psychological reason for wanting to swing the other way. But there's still a sexual duality there.
3. Its triggered the same way that "normal" sexual relations are triggered. Desire leads to experimentation. Experimentation leads to finding the "right" thing that turns you on, which leads to repeating it... cause and effect at its most basic.

if you have to ask if you are gay or begin to question, then you ARE gay. Bi sexual at the least. And no, it is not a phase.
People who are homosexual are born that way...it isn't a stage or a phase, although realizing it and coming to terms with it takes some longer than others. Some will even try to fight it or experiment with the opposite sex, as if to confirm their inner feeling that they really aren't attracted to those people.
Some non-homosexual people will also experiment with those of their same sex. Those people aren't gay...they are curious, or bisexual perhaps if they find they do lean both ways.
When you are attracted to the same sex, not only physically but mentally.
