How to support your husband in his first week as a non-smoker?

Question:
My husband, 37 years old, has just entered his 3rd day as a non-smoker after smoking for 20 years. As we speak, he is walking around the yard with his cheeks so full of sunflower seeds that he looks like a chipmunk!!! He is very much on edge right now. I have removed every item I can think of from our home to help make this transition more bearable. He says it's to the point that it's painful now. He keeps asking me questions b/c I quit smoking 3 1/2 years ago, but I did not experience withdrawal symptoms the way he is. I'm trying to think of everything I can to say to him that is inspirational and uplifting, without shoving the thought of smoking down his throat every 5 minutes, but I fear I'm not doing enough for him. Does anybody have any suggestions for me? Thank you so much!!

Answers:
He should take up running/jogging. Aerobic exercise is pretty much incompatible with smoking. But he'd better do it slowly or he'll have a heart attack. :P

Smoking is not only a physical addiction but also a psychological one. When a smoker has a cigarette, it's very often a ritual (ex. coffee -> newspaper -> cigarette). That's why he also has to break his old habits that automatically induce him to smoke. Physical cravings go away rather quickly. 1-2 weeks tops. But the psychological addictioin may linger for months.

I also quit smoking 3.5 years ago, but the big motivator for me were my health problems (chest pains, high blood pressure). I decided that I didn't want to die from heart attack and now I feel like I'm in my best physical shape of my life. :)
it is good that he quit smoking
