im 13 and i hurt my back, what do i do? (see details)?

Question:
i went to the beach about a week ago, and i might have picked up something heavy. next day i woke up and my back hurt. it still hurts now when i bend down or something. What can i do other than go to the doctor?

Answers:
Seeing that it's hurting that long, you might need to. Have you tried ice or heat on it? Ice would have been good the first or 2nd day but now moist heat. Try standing with your back so the shower with hot water hits on the bad spot, then if you have hot packs, use them a few times a day. An alternative is a sock filled with rice or a wet washcloth/towel heated for a few seconds in the microwave. Try standing as straight up as possible, put your hands on your hips and try to lean backward as far as you can, this stretches the erector (spine) muscles. When you sit or lay in bed, try to use a pillow right at your waist level or a rolled up towel to support your back. Make sure you sit and stand as straight as you can. Products like mineral ice, icy hot, and pain killer rubs are good to penetrate and loosen muscles. Also standing hands on hips trying to bend to the side stretches the muscles as well. Depending where your back hurts, a massage can help too. You might have some very tight, over extended pulled muscles, but again you might have a herniated disk and you would need to see a dr for that. Try ibuprofen, that helps irritation and inflammation. If it's not better in another week, see a dr but the most you can do now is if someone can massage your back, the heat, stretches and the ibuprofen to try to relax the muscles. Sometimes if you have a misalignment, those things can help it move back into place. Do not lift anything heavy or do anything to irritate it. A chiropractor is another option in a week if it's not better.

Other Answers:
take it easy for awhile dont do anything extreme .. your still young and have an abundance of self healing, heating pad will help allevate some of the pain

heat usually helps, if not, go see a doctor Consider a chiropractor to get your back in line. Other than that, give it rest and possibly muscle relaxants.

Ok.. Watch out for numbness and tingling.. if none, then preceed to next line.

You may now heat it to loosen some of the muscles. Hot baths, etc.. If it is swollen, then ice would be a better bet.
If it is bone pain, then I suggest also going in to get it looked at as you are still growing and you do not want a fracture overlooked. it's best to spend some time on the floor laying flat with your knees bent & feet flat on the floor. Breathe deeply and relax. Be careful how you get up & down.
Don't be lifting anything for awhile. Try a jaccuzzi or hot bath. Give it time.

get a massage or put a heat pad on it
