Sprained Ankle?
Question:
I was wondering if anyone else has had a bad ankle sprain from soccer, and how long it took to get back into the game.
I sprained it 11 days ago, and the swelling has gone down, but it is still a bit sore to walk on.

It takes a long time for these to heal, depending on how bad you were injured and how well you take care of it. A minor sprain will stop hurting in a few days with proper treatement and regain strength within a week. A bad sprain like yours will take at least 2 weeks to stop being painful. And it will take an entire month to regain its strength. What I mean by that is the muscles on the outside of your ankle remain weak and can't hold the foot stable as well as they should. You remain at high risk for re-injuring the ankle (you've been warned).
The treatment of choice for a simple sprain is ice. Most of the damage done in a sprain comes from inflammation. A typical sprain involves an injury you don't even notice. You feel fine. Then you go to bed and you wake up with a painful ankle and trouble walking or even just standing. Untreated, it could get worse over a few days time before it starts to heal. Using ice on the ankle prevent most of that damage. Ice it right after the injury (20 to 30 minutes) and then ice it again before you go to bed. For good measure, icing it halfway through the night is also a good idea. If the damage is already been done, and the ankle is no longer swollen, you really have no choice but to wait as it heals. Be careful using too much pain reliever as, if you can't feel the pain, it is easy to do something stupid and reinjure it. Drink lots of water and eat a healthy diet. This speeds your healing quite a bit.
as a person in nursing.i would say keep it elevated even if the swelling is down! try to rest and not walk around too much! It could very easily take a couple weeks to a couple months to completly heal depending on how bad it was sprained! If it hurts really bad i would see a doctor you could have also ripped or torn a muscel!
it actually depends on the severity of your ankle sprain and also which specific ankle ligament was injured.
best advise i can give you is to go see an orthopedic doctor and or a PT clinic so they can better assess your condition.xrays and special tests should be done for better evaluation of the injury.hypermobility of the ankle joint and increased predilection to repetitive injury are your major concerns.
this may take up to 6 weeks.
if the swelling has gone down,that's a good sign that you can proceed performing ankle strengthening exercises.let's just hope that there was no major tear on the ligament involved.
