running and weight gain?

Question:
I took about a month or so off of running and started running again recently every other day about 5 miles a day. I have gained 3-4 pounds?? I don't think you can gain that much muscle in 3 or 4 days, if this keeps up i'll just stop running altogether. What's the deal.

Answers:
I think it does the same for me. If I run at night, the next morning, I weight more than the day before (like 1 Lb, but I am only 100 Lbs). It may be water retaining or maybe lactic acid forming in your body ? I don't know. Anyway, better way to check if you gain / lose weight are a measure you, or to compare your fitting in your clothes (tight pants or shirts). You can gain weight and look slimmer. For the same weight, you can have 3-4 sizes difference !
Also, I encourage you to go on running. It makes you FEEL better and improve your physical and mental health a lot, even if you don't realize immediately. Run NO MORE than 4 times a week or you'll get injured.
Some TIPS :
Most efficient for weight loss and cardio training are long (very) slow sessions : should be more than 45 minutes to start loosing fat. Your heart beat should always be lower than 140 per minute if you are a 30 year-old male (130 if you are 40 etc.).
Most efficient for performance enhancement are variations in training : long slow sessions alternate with run with accelerations. Your heart frequency with go high and down, high and down. NEVER run full speed. unless you're being chased ;-)

Other Answers:
It could be partly muscle gain and maybe water weight gain. Your body is probably just storing extra water since you're just starting to run again. Especially if you've been eating salty foods.
