How do you nicely ask a guy to take a shower?

Be careful with this. Some guys (and girls) are allergic to soap.using soap makes them sweat more when they're out of the shower and makes them stink..

I'm not saying your guy has this..but be nice..we all take showers..

Maybe you could mention this out loud about your "relative" that is allergic and see if he responds..

Just kinda sniff around.and if he askes what you are doing.say, there's this really bad smell, and then get close to him and then squint your eyes like they burn and gag. I think he'll get the idea.
