This could be because you ate a big meal before running and the food was not digested. secondly, if the pain persists again without having anything prior to running, it could be a kidney stone or gases. To avoid such pain, take 2 garlic flakes cut into small pieces and gulp them with hot water on empty stomach daily for few days and see the different. The pain may be due to constipation. If constipated, correct the bowel movements. Eat Guava fruit for comfort. Good luck and best of health.

You may be having a stitch. Stitches are sharp pains like cramps that occur during exercise (particularly running), usually near the ribs, usually in the same spot, and sometimes they can get so bad that a runner has to stop and wait it out.
