discoid meniscus?
Question:
Answers:
There's always a risk with any type of surgery. Arthroscopes are very safe though. After wards he can expect some joint soreness and a grinding feeling, use ice and elevation to relieve pain and swelling, anitinflammatories, restrict weight bearing and ambulation (crutches). Any unusual drainage, redness, extreme swelling, or a "mushy" feeling in the joint, severe pain, or fever, needs to be reported to the surgeon right away. These can be signs of infection, effusion, hemathrosis, or a synovial cyst. I've known a couple people who have had this procedure and they are really glad they had it done, lots of relief. Good luck to your son, he's really young to have these probs, does he play sports?

Very safe.
He probably HAS a discoid meniscus. Surgeons do not give them to patients. They are a normal presentation of the meniscus in a small amount of the population.
Sounds like he has a meniscal tear and they are going to scope his knee to clean it out? You should probably follow up with the surgeon regarding your question.
