Stretching of the tightened musculature is a pre-requisite to easing the discomfort of back pain. You will find there is unequal muscle growth.. (one side is much larger than the other). Indicating there is an increased curve in the spine, at that area.. the concave aspect will result in the muscle being used much less than the muscle on the other side.. the side that works to keep you upright (spinae erector muscles). They must be stretched until they can equalize the burden of standing upright.

Thus, exercising would only increase the muscle density of the side already doing most of the work.
