has anyone out there had a radical proscectomy?

Question:
tell me all you know about it please!

Answers:
Being a urologist, and having undergone the surgical procedure myself, I can advise you that a radical prostatectomy is a surgical procedure done by a urologist and his assistant, usually another urologist to remove a prostate gland from a patient who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The procedure is usually performed via a lower midline incision. There are other techniques, but this approach is certainly most common. I had some pain after the procedure, that was adequately treated with narcotic medication.

I went home on the third day after the procedure with a catheter that went from my penis into my bladder. It was no big deal to have the catheter. The catheter was removed 14 days after the operation in the doctor's office. No problem there.

I had difficulty with urinary continence for a couple of weeks (leaked urine when coughing, sneezing, and so on), called "incontinence" but that cleared up with time.

I am still able to have an erection of the penis, even though this is noted to be a common side effect of the procedure (penile erectile dysfunction) called by some "impotence", and my sexual function is close to what it was prior to the operation.

This is a common operation for urologic surgeons to perform and they are usually quite good at it.

After recovery from the surgery, I have been followed by the urologist every three months with a check of a blood test called a PSA, which has been negative.

I am satisified with the result of the operation.
