I'm sure that this was tried a number of years ago by Grub Smith of the UK's FHM magazine in his column 'Grub Smith's Laboratory of Love'.

He had his ex-girlfriend have him with a strap-on, (not a large one, but with lubricant, etc) and was surprised to enjoy it, rating the experience around 7/10 for his first time. The magazine didn't mention this experiement again, but it did mention that his ex-girlfriend did say that she wished that he'd been 'as adventurous as this' when they were together.
